Shannon Noonan from Charlottetown, P.E.I., initially began working with dogs as a foster mom with the Ottawa Dog Rescue, where she adopted her first dog, Blue, a Great-Dane/Pointer mix with whom she began her journey of more formalized dog training. While there are people in certain circumstances who need to avail of professionally trained service dogs to help them with daily living, the therapeutic effect of canines on humans can come from shorter-term exposure too. When I'm not helping others, I enjoy spending my time gardening, making clothes, breaking fashion rules, and wrangling my 4 fur kids, Otter, Keister, Loki and Omen.Dogs enjoy being with their human friends unconditionally, but the effect the animals have on people is often not fully harnessed. ![]() Additionally, I chose to specialize my graduate education on LGBTQ+ needs and experiences within counseling. I have worked with queer and transgender clients in both outpatient mental health as well as in crisis residential services. I received my MA in Mental Health Counseling from Lewis and Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling and my BA in the field of neurobiology from the University of Pennsylvania. Attachment focuses on how we relate to others and ourselves across our lifespan. My work is grounded in somatic psychotherapy, attachment, mindfulness, existential psychotherapy and interpersonal neurobiology. Somatic therapy focuses on the body, how feelings show up and are processed through the body, and how we can reconnect the mind with the body to the benefit of our well-being. It is my job to make sure that therapy is a secure space for you to explore relationships, whether it be with oneself or others. ![]() How we relate to ourselves and others matter.
